While you wait, love

Today's Holy Spirit Love Note:

Sometimes you simply need to wait. I know you don’t like waiting, it doesn’t always come naturally to you, but sometimes waiting is the very best thing you can do. And that doesn’t mean sitting on your hands doing nothing. When you’re waiting for something specific you can still be taking action. Love is an action and you can love, always. When it comes to love, I never need you to wait.

You’re going to need help to know what “love” looks like in some seasons though. You don’t show up and love on all people in exactly the same way. Express love to the stranger you pass in the street in the same way you express love to your best friend? That feels weird to you because it wouldn’t be received well.

The stranger on the street can still be loved though, in a way that is appropriate within that context, and one day might become a friend.

Love is not stagnant or one-dimensional. Love is listening, allowing someone to feel heard and seen. Love is a smile, one that reaches all the way to your eyes. Love is listening to the nudges and asking that person on the bench if they’re okay. Love is walking away when they tell you they are, even when inside you’re not sure if you believe them, because you cannot force love on others. Love is taking a deep breath and not reacting when someone tries to wind you up.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. I am love.
